A delightful early 19th century silhouette portrait of Dutch Theologian, Anneaus Yprey (1760-1837).
Ypey is best known for his extensive academic works documenting the history of Protestantism and the development of the church in the Netherlands. His most influential publication is Geschiedenis van de Nederlandsche Hervormde Kerk ('History of the Dutch Reformed Church'). He also wrote comprehensive analyses of the Dutch language, poetry, and classical Christian doctrines, bridging the gap between rigorous academic theology and historical national identity.
The silhouette is finely done with exceptional detail throughout, with his name written in calligraphic from beneath. All housed in a period ebonised and gilt glazed frame.
