A first edition, first issue of 'The Virginians' by William Thackeray. Published by Bradbury & Evans, Volume I printed in 1858, Volume II printed 1859. Line 33 of p.207 has the first issue misprint of 'actresses' instead of 'ancestress' and chapters 47 and 48 are misnumbered.
Half bound in a burgundy leather with marbled boards. The spines boast five raised bands, a green leather title panel and gilt decoration. The spines of both volumes show some fading but overall, both volumes are in a very good condition externally with little shelf wear.
Marbled page edges. There is some browning to the preliminary leaves of Volume II only, all other pages of both volumes are in a very good condition; clean and bright with no inscription or damage.
