A full length bronzed silhouette of William Fairfax Spofforth (1829-1868), aged seven, wearing a gilt figured uniform, buttoned tunic with wide, frilled collar, checked neckerchief, peaked cap and holding a riding crop. The work is housed in a maple frame.
Painted on card and inscribed verso 'William Fairfax Spofforth/ This likeness taken/ June 22nd 1836/ Dorothy Spofforth/ Seven Years Old/ Done by Mr. Raper'. A newspaper excerpt dated 10 December 1841 identifies Mr Raper as a 'Profile Painter' (please see photographs).
The sitter, William Fairfax Spofforth, was baptised at Lichfield September 1829. He became a skilled surgeon and married Anne Vale, a daughter of the Sheriff of Lichfield. They had eight children. William died in 1868, aged 39.
