A carved ebonised wood grotesque corbel of small proportions, circa. late 19th/early 20th century. Probably Flemish.
The corbel, likely oak, depicts a face of 'grotesque' design with the screaming seeming to push out from the wall. The carving is wonderfully detailed with finely carved eyes, nose and teeth, the whole being blended into the background with foliate-like features.
Later plate hanging hook verso.
