**RESERVED**
'The Rehearsal' by Barbara Campbell. Unfortunately we have been unable to find any information regarding the artist herself. The label verso, 'Barbara Campbell, c/o Robert Sielle...', does help us date the work however.
Robert Sielle (1895-1983) was a leading London frame-maker and exhibition agent from the 1930s-70s. The address on the label verso was his premises between 1948-1982. The price is stated in guineas, which although long phased out, was still a currency used for pricing high-end or luxury goods until the decimal system was introduced in 1971. We can, therefore, date this work between 1948-1971.
The work is extremely atmospheric, almost impressionistic. The unusual composition makes it feel like one is amongst the orchestra, and the bold use of contrast and impasto gives the work a real verve.
The work is housed in a deep frame with black painted interior and gilded border. The 'Robert Sielle' label to the back of the frame is similarly age toned to that on the back of the canvas indicating the work is housed in its original frame as the artist intended.
